Описание: Игра основана на персонажах комиксов «Sam & Max: Freelance Police», созданных художником Стивом Пёрселлом в 1987 году. Главные герои — парочка частных детективов, антропоморфный пёс по имени Сэм (ростом 6 футов, что составляет 1,8 метра, одет в духе классического кинодетектива: мятый костюм, галстук, шляпа) и его напарник, кролик по имени Макс (которого Сэм в шутку определяет как «гиперподвижное кроликоподобное чудовище». Макс одежды, как правило, не носит.)
Сами себя они называют «вольными полицейскими» («freelance police»). Сэм — спокойный и рассудительный, в ходе расследования обычно ему достаётся роль «хорошего» полицейского, в то время как активный сверх всякой меры и чрезвычайно деятельный Макс обожает производить акты немотивированного насилия и вообще любит сцены жестокости (Сэм также их любит, просто ведёт себя при их наблюдении более пристойно).
Поскольку Сэм и Макс — детективы нью-йоркские, их методика ведения расследования в основном заключается в некорректных вопросах свидетелям и дозированном применении насилия (в тех случаях, когда за потенциальным подозреваемым нет явного численного или силового превосходства). Они передвигаются на DeSoto Adventurer 1960-го года выпуска полицейской раскраски в чёрный и белый цвета, эта машина абсолютно неуничтожима и при любом развитии событий тем или иным способом возвращается к своим владельцам.
