unit is a classic example of the heritage 'slam-door' passenger trains which once formed the
backbone of southern passenger services.
Extensive 3rd-rail electrification of the Southern Region led to the widespread adoption of
these practical EMUs, and the 4CIG (British Rail Class 421) was initially introduced on the
London-Brighton Line before being pressed into service on the Portsmouth Direct Line
between London Waterloo and Portsmouth Harbour.
The 4CIG units received a facelift in the late 1980s, and were eventually withdrawn from
mainline passenger service in the early 2000s.

the Woking-Portsmouth Line.
The 4VEP ('Vestibule Electro Pneumatic'), named the Class 423 under the British Rail TOPS
classification system, was one of the 'slam-door' electric multiple units that formed the
backbone of rail passenger transport in southern England from the 1960s until after 2000.
EMU's like the 4VEP were a part of daily life to hundreds of thousands of commuters, with
the persistent slamming of their doors signalling the imminent departure of another busy
service. Each 4-car set was powered by 750-volt DC electricity supplied via a third rail,
giving a top speed of 90mph. Built by BREL at York, these classic EMUs served for almost 40
years, their high-density seating layouts and performance proving adequate for their role
until the introduction of the more modern 'Dersiro' units.

to replace aging and out-dated 'heritage' units. Designed for use on Southern branch-line
and suburban services with numerous stops and little need for high top speeds, the Class
455 runs in 4-car formations up to a maximum speed of 75mph, and remains a familiar sight
around South London and all along the Southern network. A total of 137 Class 455 sets were
produced, and with regular refurbishments taking place the type is still playing its part to
keep Southern England moving.
The Class 455 for RailWorks 2, developed by Thomson Interactive, includes 3 liveries,
accurately reproduced drivers cab and controls including functional DRA (Drivers Reminder
Appliance), independent wiper selection, functional glare screen visor and opening cab
windows (animated in-cab and external view), and all-new sounds recorded from a real Class
455.

complete with Portsmouth Direct Line scenarios and plenty to keep you busy in the cab.
The Class 444 'Desiro' electrical multiple units (EMUs) were built by Siemens AG in 2003 and
2004. Forty-five of these flagship sets were built to handle express services for South West
Trains, as part of the process of replacing ageing 'slam-door' rolling stock so familiar to
commuters in the south of England. After the teething problems encountered when
introducing other new trains types in the UK, the 444s were subject to extensive testing at
the Wildenrath test track prior to entering service. These 5-car units can run at 100mph on
750 volts DC, and with many realistic in-cab features, the Class 444 is a great addition to
your Portsmouth Direct Line.

ready to get to work for you in Train Simulator.
The Class 33 first appeared in British Rail Green livery in 1960 and was deployed in the south
east. The first British Rail locomotives to be fitted with a modern electric train heating
system, the 33 quickly spread across the whole Southern Region and could occasionally be
seen much further afield, mostly running passenger services but also turning its hand to
freight operations. A total of 98 examples were built, fitted with 1,550-horsepower Sulzer
engines, and they proved popular with crews. The 'Crompton' worked throughout the BR Blue
and Network Southeast eras, and 40 survived in service up to the privatisation of the
network and continued working for their new owners, EWS. These have now been retired
from service, though a number survive in preservation today. With 7 authentic liveries and
Sea Lion ballast hoppers, the Class 33 Add-On for Train Simulator is a classic for British Rail
diesel fans.
