At this time, the line was a mere 25 miles in length, but by 1860 it had grown considerably with extensions and branches to virtually every corner of Weardale and Teesdale, covering more than 100 miles. The original line is probably most famous as being the world's first public railway to use steam locomotives when they were first introduced in 1833. The area was linked with a prestigious and long list of railway heritage, with several railway- related works and engineering facilities to be found throughout the network. Darlington Railway Works, responsible for the building of many steam and diesel locomotives, was built in 1863 and survived until the Beeching Axe in 1966. Shildon Railway Works, known locally as 'The Wagon Works' as it built many of British Rail's freight revenue vehicles, is also a famous landmark in the area, closing only recently in 1984 and now home to 'Locomotion', the National Railway Museum's second site. Much of this extensive railway network and many of those famous landmarks suffered at the hands of Dr Beeching, whose sweeping changes to the British rail network in the 1960s closed many of the branch lines to passenger traffic. As collieries closed and freight traffic reduced, by 1980 there was virtually nothing left of the famous routes as they were once known. Towns such as Crook, Tow Law, Barnard Castle, Piercebridge and Bishop Auckland – once bustling railway towns – lost their stations and trackbed lifted, and today visitors to the area would never believe they once had such a rich railway heritage. The Weardale and & Teesdale Network faithfully recreates the main lines and branch lines around the area as they were between 1950 and 1960, just before the Beeching closures, recreating almost all of the 100 miles of rail lines between Durham City, Darlington, Middleton-in-Teesdale and Wearhead. Classic BR green liveried diesel traction is also represented, in the guise of the Class 08, Class 25, Class 37 and Class 101, along with Mk1 blood and custard coaching stock and a number of freight wagons, including a 21t Mineral Hopper, 16t Mineral Wagon, Five Plank Mineral Wagon, Six-Wheel Milk Tanker, Presflo Bulk Powders Wagon, 20t Bitumen Tank Wagon, 20t Toad E Brake Van and 10t Cattle Van. The Class 105 could also found on suburban routes out of London King's Cross before electrification. Once the stable of North East railways, operating alongside their superior cousins, the Class 101, most of the units that operated in that area were based at the DMU Maintenance Depot at Bank Top, Darlington. However, some units were based at Heaton Depot, Newcastle and operated local services to Sunderland, Hartlepool and Durham. Some Cravens Class 105s were designated as Class 106s, due to them being fitted with different engines; however they were all later re-classified to Class 105. They were also based on the BR Mk1 coach body, underframe and bogies, Cravens having built a number of these coaches for British Rail previously. Nineteen of the Class ran as three car units, but all of the centre cars had been withdrawn and re-used in Class 101 trains by 1970. None of the units were selected for refurbishment as they were candidates for early withdrawal, however they operated in passenger service until 1988 in their BR Corporate Blue livery. The Class has also fared badly in preservation, with only three vehicles preserved today; a number of cars were also purchased and sectioned for use as store rooms on North Sea gas platforms, although it is not known whether any of these sections survived. The Class 105 for Train Simulator is available in British Railways Green livery and features a working gear lever, wipers, engine start/stop, AWS, headlamps and tail markers, and changeable numberboards. Many K1s would regularly be seen as far north as Edinburgh and they were frequently used on the West Highland line in the early days. Many were later allocated to the Eastern Region with a large number going to March, Cambridgeshire. K1's were used throughout the former LNER network and proved to be very versatile, working everything from local coal trains to express passenger services. The K1's were withdrawn and scrapped by 1967: however, No. 62005 was used for a short time as an emergency boiler and consequently survived into preservation. It has become very popular on main line rail tours especially on the West Highland Line to Mallaig and has also sported the un-prototypical, but very fetching, LNER Green Lined livery as No. 2005. With a very short 0-6-0 wheelbase, the Class 03 had a top speed of 28.5mph (46km/h) and found itself working at places like Ipswich Docks where heavier Class 08s were unable to operate, and as station pilots across the UK network. Today, a total of 56 in the Class have survived into preservation, with one remaining in active service until 2008 for Govia Thameslink Railway as a yard shunter. With a demand for faster, less restrictive diesel locomotives in the early 1960s, the BR Class 25, with its 1,250bhp engine and 90mph (145km/h) top speed, could be seen across the UK network, earning their affectionate nickname of 'Rat'. Initially designed for freight work, some 'Rats' were fitted with boilers so they could heat passenger trains, in particular on the Crewe to Cardiff services in the 1980s. In March 1987, the final Class 25 was withdrawn from service with 20 examples surviving the cutter's torch and today can be found in various states of operation at heritage railways across the UK. The diesel-electric BR Class 31 was built by Brush Traction between 1957 and 1962 with Mirrlees engines and a top operational speed of 80mph (129km/h). Their original 1,250bhp or 1,365bhp engines proved to be unsuccessful, and the fleet was subsequently fitted with English Electric engines instead – the same motive power as fitted to Class 37s but with a lower 1,470bhp. The Class 31 is probably best known for its numerous variants, the /0 variant easily recognisable for its lack of headcode box above the cab, earning the nickname 'Skinhead'. The sound of 'Tractors' is synonymous to the 1960s, the BR Class 37 being a frequent sight across the UK, in particular in East Anglia and Scotland hauling InterCity services. Built between 1960 and 1965 by English Electric at their Vulcan Foundry and Robert Stephenson and Hawthorns, 309 of the Class were produced. British Rail initially placed an order of 42 locomotives in January 1959, with the remainder of the Class being built between 1960 and 1965, very much as a mixed traffic locomotive, easily pulling coaches or hauling freight. Built by Cravens between 1956 and 1959, the BR Class 105 had the same side design profile as Mk1 coaches, utilising the same doors and windows for efficiency and cost saving. A total of 302 cars were built with 150bhp per engine and a top speed of 70mph (112km/h), initially made up as three-car (19 units) and two-car configurations. The Class 105 was used throughout the UK on rural and branch line services in East Anglia, North East and North West England and parts of Southern Scotland, and also running in and out of London Kings Cross on suburban services before electrification. The BR Blue Pack for Train Simulator recreates these popular diesel locomotives as they worked over the Weardale & Teesdale Network in the 1960s. Also included are PCA, PCAV and YGH 'Sealion' freight wagons, plus BR Mk1 passenger coaches in blue/grey livery. The Class 24 was a Sulzer Type 2, Bo-Bo diesel-electric locomotive built between 1958 and 1961, incorporating numerous elements such as off-the-shelf standardised components used for manufacture, including a Sulzer 6LDA28 diesel engine and a 735Kw British Thomson- Houston (BTH) electric transmission, producing a total of 1,160hp resulting in a top speed of 75mph (120km/h). Built at BR's Derby, Crewe and Darlington Works, Class 24s could be seen running services initially around Derby and Crewe, but eventually across the British Rail network hauling both passenger and freight. Fifteen of the original 20 locomotives were put into use on the Southern Region as the Kent Coast electrification scheme was behind schedule, and could also be spotted in the Eastern Region, London Midland Region, Wales and Lancashire. Class 24s also took over Condor freight services from London to Glasgow, replacing Class 28s, and became the foundation for the later Class 25 model. The first Class 24 to be withdrawn from service was D5051 in November 1967 and by 1979, all but three Class 24s had been withdrawn from service, 14 of which were scrapped before receiving a TOPS number. The final locomotive, 24081, was withdrawn in October 1980. Today, only four of the Class have survived into preservation, D5032 and D5061 at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, D5054 at the East Lancashire Railway and 24081 at the Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Railway. The BR Class 24 for Train Simulator recreates the locomotive as it operated for British Railways throughout the UK in the 1960s, and is available in British Railways corporate blue/grey livery. To rekindle the fire of a bygone era, the LNWR G2 comes to authentic life within Train Simulator, ready for contemporary mixed-traffic service courtesy of Partner Programme Developer MeshTools. Building upon the previous iteration of 0-8-0 locomotives became nothing short of a habit for the LNWR, and early examples such as the A Class were consistently rebuilt to incorporate new features. One particular class of locomotive, the G2, was designed as a more capable 0- 8-0 than the earlier G1, which in turn was essentially a superheated D Class. Upgraded features such as a higher boiler pressure, strengthened frames, large axles and axle boxes plus a redesigned and strengthened direct acting joy valve gear were all present in the G2, and the 60 locomotives which were produced were all entirely new builds. While the LNWR G2 Class comprised of an average-sized fleet, the overall number of active 0-8-0s totalled up to 502 – the 4th largest fleet of the LMS and 6th largest of British Railways. With numbers running high, the LNWR 0-8-0s were a regular sight across the network, and the G2s, with their various advancements, proved popular for nearly any duty. Freight, passenger, banking, shunting, you name it and a G2 would often be at the helm. As the now-merged LMS began to further innovate in locomotive design, with Sir William Stanier producing iconic designs such as the LMS Black 5, Jubilee and Princess Coronation Classes, the LNWR 0-8-0s managed to stand their ground as a worthy piece of the railway puzzle. Surprisingly, the G2 fleet became subject to a number of Stanier-overseen upgrades, the net result being that no two G2s were ever quite the same. Having served since 1921, the G2s were starting to age alongside even older LNWR 0-8-0s. It was decided that a further development process would be undertaken, and the result was the LMS 7F. Also known as the G3, nicknamed Austin 7, the LMS 7F followed on from the G2 and featured a long travel Walschaerts valve gear and higher boiler pressure, and was intended to allow the 0-8-0s to retire. The 7Fs were fantastic when they worked, however they were very prone to failures. Inadequate axle boxes from Derby's 4F spelled an early end for the expensive to run and rarely available 7F fleet, the last of which was withdrawn in 1959. Having outlived their 'successors', the G2 locomotives lived on until 1964, with the last two leaving service at the end of that year. Out of the 60 LNWR G2 locomotives, which were known by many as the Super Ds, only one survived into preservation. Today, 49395 lives in Shildon as part of the National Railway Museum's collection.
