Он содержит карты, включающие океаны, моря, заливы, проливы, острова и архипелаги и т.д. с указанием дистанций и курсов. Судьба атласа Торнтона непроста. Формально его издал Джон Торнтон (официальный гидрограф Ост-Индской компании), однако он всего лишь сделал отпечатки с медных пластин, подготовленных компанией-партнерством, в которую входили Джон Селлер, Уильям Фишер и он сам. Партнерство распалось вследствие финансовых проблем, медные гравюры в большинстве своем отошли Джону Торнтону,
который и издал предлагаемый в раздаче атлас в 1700 году.-
